Shizen: Embracing the authentic world of nature in your home

The Japanese principle of Shizen (自然), or the absence of artificiality, offers another powerful counterpoint to the disconnect of modern life, speaking to our deep-seated need for simple, natural peace.  Shizen is fundamentally a philosophy of life that advocates for the integration of the raw, genuine beauty of nature into our lives.

To embody Shizen, we must first dissolve the barriers between indoors and out. This involves prioritizing the flow of natural light and views, perhaps by maximizing transparency with large openings and utilizing light-filtering materials like delicate linen or thin wooden slats to allow for the soft, dynamic play of shadow.

Secondly, the principle demands an embrace of materials in their most truthful state. This is where the innate, unembellished beauty of wood grain, stone veins, and fiber textures takes center stage. This commitment can manifest in incorporating raw architectural elements, utilizing live-edge wood that honors the material's original contours, or selecting unpolished, honed, or sandblasted stone. Even textiles, such as linen, hemp, wool, and unbleached cotton, are valued for their natural textures and small, honest imperfections, which enhance the organic feel of the whole.

Shizen necessitates intentionally integrating life and water into our immediate surroundings to connect with the outdoors. Focus on quality, not clutter.  Use one or two sculptural plants or a well-placed bonsai with adequate light and space (Ma). Adding water features, a small courtyard, or a moss garden visible through a window enhances peace and restoration by subtly introducing nature's sounds.

Ultimately, Shizen is more than an aesthetic choice, it is a commitment to living mindfully and harmoniously with the environment. By carefully selecting raw materials, maximizing natural light, and dissolving artificial boundaries, we cultivate a life and a home that offers the effortless sense of peace that only a deep connection with nature can provide.
